My friend and I walked for about an hour to get there at around 3.50 pm but the security guy didn't let us come in. He just used the body language and Nepali, didn't speak English so we couldn't understand the reason. A waiter of a nearby restaurants told us to come in the early to be able to get inside that was helpful to know.
The view from this place was great. The road to get here also has some beautiful view point. But quite dusty and many rubbish...

It is fantastic place. A place where one can learn and practice Buddhism. You must follow some basic rules regarding the clothes you wear, habit of drinking and smoking etc. For the inner transformation, any one from any corner of the world can come for November course during the month of November.

Seriously don't go..... .Visiting is not allowed there .You need booking almost before a week to go there...its very disheartened to say that being buddhist country nepal you are not allowed to visit there ....

I had a really nice 'private stay' at Kopan for 4 nights. The monastery and compound is beautiful, overlooking Kathmandu. Hearing the monks' pujas at night was incredible. The optional spiritual program was good; some of the monks dont have great English; the young German guy leading the meditation sessions was excellent. Great library. Good cafe. A wonderful place for learning, self reflection and peace.

Very special place where westerners have the opportunity to take courses on Buddhism in a functioning monastary. Perched on the top of a hill, overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, the setting is so well suited for retreats. You have a little distance from the whiz and whir of Kathmandu whilst also never loosing sight. I took 3 short courses over a month and enjoyed each and every one. Teachers are very knowledgeable, the content is scheduled well, meals are varied and delicious and the accommodation is also very comfortable. Highly recommended.

It’s a bit of a walk if you don’t want to use a taxi or a motorbike, but the tranquil gardens and buildings worth the visit. Keep in mind that it is a functioning monastery. There are restricted areas, a dress code and rules to conduct yourself by.
